However, the two months of frenzied spending, shopping, and socializing are hard for a lot of people, and rightly so. The giving has become commercialized and there are great financial and emotional demands. We are invited to empty our wallets and competitively consume as if the person who spends the most becomes the happiest. Yet it is a period when people report higher levels of anxiety and depression.
We are supposed to feel more connected to loved ones, but expectation of togetherness and bliss can lead to bitterness and disillusionment as family issues arise. In these polarized times, we may end up feeling alienated over differences or abandoned due to exclusion. The sense of loneliness or being on the outside can feel worse if we have lost loved ones. We don’t need to pretend to be happy if we’re sad, or to keep a smile on our face if we’re struggling to make ends meet.
